Kim came from fashion buying. Her partner at the time was covering weddings from every angle: cars, catering, photography. But whenever anyone asked where to go for a dress, he had nothing to offer. So she opened the shop. That was 1977.
A bride came in with her mum for her first appointment. They found the dress. A few months later, the mum died. The bride kept coming back for her fittings and brought her mum's best friend with her each time, the woman who was going to become her mother-in-law.
A bride pulled me aside the second she arrived and told me she was pregnant. Her mum was already sitting in the boutique and had no idea. We spent the whole appointment steering away from anything too fitted, finding reasons that had nothing to do with the real reason.
A bride ordered a gown and when it arrived we removed the swing tickets before steaming it, which is standard. She came to collect it, looked it over, and decided it had to be a fake because the tags were gone. We gave her the money back. The dress was completely genuine.
Come in with an open mind and as relaxed as you can. You might be surprised how different you feel once you try the dresses on.
Two people. One for support, one for a second opinion. Bring more than that and you've got a committee.
Alterations can be costly. Start with a silhouette that already suits your shape and you will spend a lot less putting it right further down the line.
Now you've met Kim. Come and say hello in person.
